Trump, the Lord of Misrule
It occurs to me how Trump rallies are like the ‘World Upside down’ ritual role reversals of medieval Christian society (held at or after the Winter’s Solstice under the auspices of Saturn to replace the Roman Saturnalia), and Trump is the ‘Lord of Misrule’ at the ongoing Saturnalian ‘Feast of Fools.’ It was a time when clerics could run around being drunk, lusty and disorderly, and the peasants could get one over on their ‘betters,’ the educated ruling class — a medieval version of ‘owning the Libs.’
The thing to remember is that the World Upside Down reversals, and the social unrest safety valve or venting during the Saturnalia festival of misrule, were instituted — by both the Romans and, later, maintained by the elite ruling classes of Europe — for nearly two millennia — in order to KEEP the disenfranchised classes down. Such spectacles as Trump’s super-spreader events are a function of throwing his supporters a bone so as keep them oppressed, deprived and subjugated the rest of the time.
An ongoing and addictive ‘Feast of Fools,’ a steady toxic-media feed of ‘Bread and Circuses,’ does not a life-sustaining diet make.
