Chauvin’s Murderous Mind State

I keep trying to figure out what was going through the murderer’s mind during his incomprehensible act, and get pushed out after only a few moments. It’s a no-go zone.

There are elements of how they both worked as bouncers at the same club. Floyd was way better at it, less confrontational, more diplomatic, way less violent. Everybody loved Floyd, who was kinder, more respectful and conciliatory while being strong — those sterling, desirable bouncer qualities. Co-workers, customers and employer had problems with Chauvin, who over-reacted, over-compensated, was more violent and contemptuous. They worked out at the same gym for a time. Floyd was bigger, taller, stronger, more fit and athletic, more popular, sociable, kinder and more beautiful. There was a personal grudge, jealousy, envy, fear. This is obvious. It was a crime of opportunity, as he couldn’t have planned the call-out on Floyd that day, but it was personal. The charges laid by the state were exact.

Watching the entire cellphone video, shot by Darnella Frazier, of the nine and a half minute murderous act — the simple, astonishing, real-time record of an act of witting murder — looking into Chauvin’s eyes, it seemed he was in some kind of fugue state. When the ambulance came, when Floyd wasn’t breathing and showed no pulse, and the medics needed to get to him to attempt resuscitation, they had to ask the killer to get off Floyd’s neck so they could work on him. They had to ask him several times. It was like Chauvin COULDN’T stop.

His explanation, later, was something to the effect that Floyd was a really strong man so he had to make absolutely sure he stayed down.

Here’s the original police statement on the ‘incident.’ Thank god for that video by Darnella Frazier. Without it Chauvin, and the police department, would literally have gotten away with murder.
